Welcome to the Towhee Class at Woods Forest School—an all-outdoor, play-based, nature-immersive program crafted specifically for early learners ages 2.5 to 4 years.  Inspired by Waldorf Education and Forest School principles, our program offers a gentle, nature-rich space for young children to explore, connect, and grow at their own rhythm. From 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, children immerse themselves in child-led free play, forest wanderings, seasonal songs, storytelling, and small group exploration.

Days: Monday & Wednesday - 1 space available 

Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

The Woodpecker Class is a play-based, nature-enrichment program for children ages 4.5 to 7. We use the natural environment as our primary classroom, nurturing the whole child through hands-on discovery and respectful guidance.

Rooted in Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Magda Gerber, and Bev Bos philosophies, our curriculum balances child-led inquiry with predictable daily rhythms:

• Waldorf-Inspired Literacy: Discovery-led storytelling, letters, form drawing, and reading readiness.
• Nature Exploration: Unit studies covering pollinators, trees, birds of prey, fungi, and aquatic ecosystems.
• Practical Skills: Candle making, whittling, knot tying, seed planting, and nature journaling.
• Social-Emotional Growth: Safety checks, buddy systems, and reflections that build self-reliance and peer collaboration.

Session description: 

Connecting with Nature and Sensory Experience

• Guided hikes
• Noticing  the current season and how the environment changes.
• Working with natural materials like mud, clay, twigs, or wool

Practical Skills and Craftsmanship

• Simple purposeful handwork like finger knitting, making cordage, or weaving with grass, sewing and wood-making. 
• Building 
• Learning respectful, safe tool use 
• Cultivating a respectful relationship with cooking 

Imagination, Story, and Artistic Expression

• Verbal storytelling
• Open-ended role-playing 
• Creating art
• Singing simple, rhythmic songs, poems and literature  

Group Life 

• Caring for our space 
• Nature Journaling 
• Engaging in discussions that foster wonder and curiosity about the natural world.
